LES Center Reading Group
In the summer of 2020, we decided to start an LES Reading Group to introduce people to Smith's work, specifically work that they may not have read from her. That initial group went well, and participants asked when we could do it again.
As a result, we have decided to offer an LES Reading Group at least once every academic semester. For the fall 2020 semester, Siân Round has chosen six texts from Lillian Smith and Paula Snelling's journal that they edited from 1936-1945. At it's height, the journal had 10,000 subscribers and included contributors such as W.J. Cash, Sterling Brown, Pauli Murray, and more.
The fall 2020 reading group consists of six pieces that appeared in early issues of Psuedopodia from 1936 and 1937. They include Smith and Snelling's goals for the journal, reviews of novels such as Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind and William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!, and early sections of W.J. Cash's The Mind of the South. These selections provide important insights into some of the formative years of Smith's work, writing, and thought.
If you are interested in participating, please just send us an email with your name and email address. You can send it to email@example.com
We will meet via Zoom to discuss the readings on October 20, 2020, at 1:00 EST.
You will receive an email with the Zoom meeting information as the date approaches.
We look forward to meeting and discussing Smith's work with you.
